Treatment for Pain and Soft Tissue Injuries

At Midland Physiotherapy, we offer advanced Shockwave Therapy to help patients recover from acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions that haven’t responded to conventional treatment. This non-invasive technology is proven to reduce pain, promote healing, and restore mobility - often in just a few sessions.

What is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave Therapy uses focused acoustic waves to stimulate blood flow, break down scar tissue, and accelerate your body’s natural healing processes. It’s an evidence-based treatment used worldwide for treating chronic soft tissue injuries and tendinopathies.

  • Non-invasive – No needles or surgery
  • Minimal downtime – Resume normal activity quickly
  • Drug-free pain relief – Reduces the need for medication

What to Expect During Treatment

A typical session lasts 10–20 minutes. Most patients experience a reduction in pain and improved function within 3–5 sessions. You may feel slight discomfort during treatment, but it’s generally well tolerated and doesn’t require anaesthesia.

Is Shockwave Therapy Right for You?

Shockwave Therapy is ideal for people with long-standing conditions that haven’t improved with rest, physiotherapy, or medication. During your initial consultation, our physiotherapists will assess your condition and determine if it’s a suitable treatment option for you.

Shockwave FAQs

Get clear, expert answers to the most common questions about how Shockwave Therapy works, what to expect during treatment, and how it supports your recovery.

  • How quickly will I feel the benefit?

Shockwave Therapy is approved by NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) for its exceptionally low risk, making it a safe and effective option for treating musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions and chronic pain. It provides early-stage pain relief due to its mild anaesthetic effect, while longer-term benefits typically emerge after 3 to 6 sessions.

Research also shows that the healing process stimulated by Shockwave Therapy can continue for up to 3–4 months after the final treatment. While it’s not a replacement for rehabilitation, it works best when used alongside a structured rehab plan to support full recovery. The effects are cumulative, so a minimum of four sessions is recommended, with each session spaced approximately 7 to 10 days apart.

  • Does Shockwave Therapy hurt?

Shockwave Therapy is a non-invasive, non-surgical treatment that is generally well tolerated and often pain-free. Treatment typically begins at a lower intensity, with fewer pulses, allowing patients to ease into the therapy comfortably. The intensity is gradually increased over subsequent sessions based on individual tolerance.

Some patients may experience mild discomfort in the treatment area during the procedure, often described as small, repetitive pulses on the skin. Pain perception varies from person to person, and our clinicians adjust the treatment to ensure it remains within your comfort level.

  • Do I still need to do my exercises?

Absolutely! We believe in taking action - not making excuses. Effectively loading the injured tissue is essential to achieving the best results with Shockwave Therapy. While Shockwave is a powerful tool, it complements physiotherapy, not replaces it. It is often used as a non-invasive alternative to steroid injections or surgery. For optimal recovery, we recommend avoiding high-impact exercise for 48 hours following each session.

Some patients may experience mild discomfort or irritation in the treated area. If this occurs, please inform your therapist. Pain can be managed with paracetamol if needed, but we advise against using non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (such as ibuprofen), as they may interfere with the therapeutic effects of the treatment. We favour this approach because it's a safe, drug-free, and natural method of supporting the body’s healing process.
